PRINT MOTIVATION
In the video, Saroj Ghoting used the example of having the audience participate by repeating the reoccurring phrase in Jesse Bear What Will You Wear to Demonstrate print motivation (enjoyment of books)

EMERGENT LITERACY RESOURCES
On the Emergent Literacy Resources page, I selected the Maryland Model for School Readiness link because an important role of a librarian is to help better prepare children for school. The MMSR website tells the 5 components of Action. They are 1-Classroom Instruction, 2- Assessment, 3-Communications with Family, 4-Coordination with Early Education Programs & Initiatives, 5-Integrated Staff Development Activities

1-FALSE-It is important when planning your storytime to put the variety of formats in a order that has the longest story after the Warm Up & then follows the Structure of Storytime format

2-FALSE-According to the video featuring Saroj Ghoting, you do NOT need to change the structure of your storytime to highlight a skill. You use your storytime to "feature" the skill but you do not change the storytime to "reflect that skill."

LANGUAGE & VOCABULARY
1-Sharing songs help babies build oral language because they can see through the song that words are broken down into parts or syllables & that helps them build the skills they will need when learning to read. This will help with their reading readiness.

2-The Humpty Dumpty rhyme & flannel board help demonstrate Language Development. By doing the flannel board on a regular basis, the children begin to recognize what is happen going to happen next by listening to the story. Then they will begin to develop the skills necessary to listen properly & comprehend what is being said.

NARRATIVE SKILLS
1-Jon says that by using different voices during the story you can keep the kids engaged. Also, when you ask predicting questions the kids stay engaged by telling you what they think is going to happen next!

2-In the second video Buff, gives the kids the opportunity to make predictions, in the end allowing the listeners to retell parts of the story, talk about their favorite parts, etc. This will help encourage them to be active and engaged listeners

PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
We can help young children develop phonological awareness by doing ALL of the following:
a-Include rhyming stories in our storytimes
b-Include songs in our storytimes
c-Include language play in our storytimes

Parent/Caregiver Connection
Buff told us one way to involve parents in the programs activity is to look for items in everyday life that begin with the same letter of the storytime theme. In Buff's example, she used the book Fish Wish to demonstrate Fish begins with a "f". Then she encourages parents to look at home, for items or activities like "fan" that begin with the letter "f". Another activity she tells parents to do with children involves the colorful ribbons. By making them "dance" in all different directions, styles, & locations, parents can help children use both sides of their brain which is essential for learning.


LETTER RECOGNITION
In the first video, Buff uses her name's last letter, "f" to demonstrate letter recognition. She sounds out the letter, encourages the audience to say it too & then points to letter in the word "fish". During the second videos she does a few plays on the letter "f". Buff points & sounds out the word emphasizing the "f". Then makes the "f" fall down enunciating each "f" clearly. She continues by using some "f" words to make predictions about the possibility of furry fish, freaky fish or friendly fish.

CONCEPTS ABOUT PRINT
"Concepts about print is a term referring to book and print awareness. This includes knowing the parts of a book, how to hold a book and turn the pages, that print tracks from left to right and top to bottom, and the idea that print conveys meaning. Understanding these basic concepts about print is an important component of school readiness." This comes directly from the wiki page & describes it better in those words than I could possibly use.

The most interesting thing I learned about Operations is how much they actually do. In addition to creating such a good quiz...they have to maintain & oversee almost all of the daily activities that are required to make CCPL function properly. Plus they let me know that as of 2006 there were 60 billion email transactions Every Day!
